Help! My life is upside down! »

Life with ECW

The last time this blog was really updated was some time back in February. Considering it’s now May, an actual blog update is in order. As many of you know I have moved back home after starting a new job with eClinicalWorks in Westborough, Mass and have been adjusting to life after Boston.

Life for the most part has become exciting and fast for the most part. For instance, I have only been at my new job since the middle of May but since then I have

Moved back home

The office is located in Westborough Mass, 40 minutes west of Boston, but the commute is over an hour once you consider Boston traffic. Besides wanting to move out of the current apartment, it made no sense to drive the commute from Boston when the commute from my parent’s house is about the same. So now I get to live off the generosity of my parents and still enjoy the same commute. Although I miss the privacy of having my own space, I do not miss the expense.

Got finances straight

The move back to my parents, plus the salary increase did way more for my finances than I imagined. The money I saved from not paying rent was easily used to pay my credit card debt that was incurred from my move to Boston a year ago (ironic). Plus, my tax return money came in April, and now for once I am swimming in a pool of savings that I will be using to pay my student loans, or vacation. Whichever I feel like paying for first. In fact for the past 2 months I have been on a semi spending spree, yet I still have more money than I know what to do with.

Reassured last job was just a bridge job

I took the job at Investors Bank not because the pay was horrible, but the benefits in the long run would eventually work in my favor. However, I no longer wanted to go get my MBA part time and the interesting positions in the company weren’t popping up fast enough. In a way, I knew I was taking the job because the idea of living in Boston was desirable, even if I turned out to hate the city after. I wouldn’t have met the people I met that share the same city lifestyle I seek, in addition I got my current job through an old Boston roommate. Now that I have moved on to something I think I enjoy, I wonder why I lasted so long at an unfulfilling job while I knew better opportunities existed.

Appreciated Boston more while happy to leave and move on

Boston and I have had our moments, but I think I am enjoying the city more often now that I am a visitor and not experiencing the hustle of M-F life. The cost of living is high, the traffic is slow, and it’s a city that gets boring really fast. But, Boston does have a high number of 20 somethings, which in turn brings the best bars and drinking scene in New England. I get to enjoy all the fun things, and not any of the bull, while I’ve moved on, I won’t forget that Boston was a special time in my life and is an essential passing ground for every young New Englander.

Lost physical activity

I am seriously worried about my physical health. Maybe more so because it’s starting to get nice to run again and for the past 2 months I have been stuffing my face. At least at my last job I got up once in a while to take a walk, even for lunch, but once I stepped into a job in farm country, it’s a chore to find time to be physical. I spend 2 hours commuting each day, 9 hours sitting, plus being confined to a small office in a town where you have to drive for lunch. The lifestyle is very car driven and I can feel the effect on my waistline plus my energy level. I can easily tell why America is getting fatter by the minute.

Gotten in a relationship

I saved the best for last. Something I didn’t expect coming out of the whole new job/ moving back home business, was a girlfriend. What started out as something fun in March turned into a (somewhat new) relationship (an awesome one too). While it is still developing, we are still the happiest and most fun couple you’ve seen. We can be doing nothing at all, yet laugh as if we’re having a blast. The distance between us is keeping us apart, but so far has only strengthened our relationship, and after a long week at work, I can’t imagine any other person who I would want to spend my weekend with. Thanks for everything so far, Katie.

Right now I have started traveling for my current job, just last week I was in Tampa, Florida, and now I am in Boise, Idaho for 2 weeks. The job is demanding, I miss my girlfriend, but when else can you be in a faraway city with all expenses paid?

More soon to come.
