My official Invitation

pic 011

My official invitation came in the mail Monday.

With much anticipation, I can happily tell you my assignment.

Community Development/ Information Technology -> in Cape Verde, West Africa.

Staging begins July 5th, 2005.

As far as country details, I am still very very suprised. Since nomination, I pondered every possible country to see which one I would like the most. I could have sworn my placement officer mentioned I would be placed in an English speaking country. But of course, programs change, and details will shift going from Boston to DC. Earlier, I had a clue of where I could be going, even though I knew I should still keep it a suprise. It wasn’t until the night before where I considered that I should do some research on Cape Verde (because someone was leaving around the same time I was). The country is actually very nice, and then soon I doubted myself that I would be placed there. Ironically, the next day I found out Cape Verde is where I am invited to.

My invitation packet has a booklet explaining the country in a Peace Corps perspective. I encourage you to do some research on your own, see if you think it fits me. Decision to accept/reject needs to be done by next week. I’ll need some time on this one. Expect a full anecdote soon.

Patience, again. Patience.

Update: In your research, it might help to use alternate search terms such as “Cabo Verde”, or “Capo Verde”. Since finding that out, the results have been a little more jaw-dropping… to say the least.

Congratulations. I wish I had some stories from Cape Verde on ThirdGoal.com for you, but I don’t yet. Maybe you could post the first one.

    Sincerely,
Jason Pearce of Third Goal, a community blog for Peace Corps volunteers.

Considering service in the country is not that old, I wouldn’t think there would be. As far as being the first…. it’s a done deal.

Hmmm, not too much info yet. Hey! Maybe you’ll be like Dr. Carter on E.R. and come back from your time in Africa married to a Cape Verde hottie! That would be interesting.

Anyhoo, I know it’s a tough decision but I think you pretty much had your heart in it from day one. Enjoy Africa you lucky mo’ fo’ and don’t forget to write and send pictures. (Or post or whatever).

Yes, while I get ‘the big picture’, it’s still blurry as to what I will actually be doing. Cape Verde is composed of 9 something islands, each with its own culture and flair. I know for 3 months I will be in Santiago, but then it’s all up in the air from there. I should have internet access and will keep up better online than I originally thought. Thanks for the encouragement Phil, I’ll keep you close when I’m writing about all the babies all the fun Dr. Carter will have.
