What Have I been listening to
February 26th, 2005 by Sarin
or what music I got into once I exhausted myself of Interpol.
Ray Charles - It’s hard to get into his stuff as his material dates back decades. Luckily, the movie soundtrack is a great place to start, but the three disc The Birth of Soul - The Complete Atlantic Recordings is a wealth of classics. If you’ve seen the movie, the title should mean alot to you.
The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson - I have been relistening to Brian Wilson’s SMiLE again in hopes of trying to understand why it never got nominated for a grammy. But then I chose to ignore it because idiots be stupid yo. I also got a chance to listen to the old Beach Boys album Pet Sounds in stereo and was slightly enjoyed by it. It is hard to retrain your ears to an album you have been accustomed to hearing in mono, and the stereo effect allows you to pick up things you didn’t hear the first time.
Keane - My newest favorite album, Hopes and Fears doesn’t dissapoint. I ignored them when they popped up on VH1, but I gave them another go when I was seeing their cd lying around people’s apartments. Hopes and Fears is a tight poppy melodic set of ballads, daydreams, despair and wishes. Their principal instrument is a piano/keyboard, so it may turn people off at first. It may not stand the test of time, but it’s a fresh breath compared to guitar driven rock of today.
Elvis Costello - When not listening to his greatest hits collections, his classic album My Aim is True still inspires. It’s a wonder how he can write so many great songs on one album, and delivers ferocity that only a rock star can deliver. I would be content if the songs were half as good, but since it’s punch after punch, this album is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Even though it’s 1977, it’s still as fresh as it is today.
Other mentions, The Peter Malick Group f. Norah Jones - New York City, The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute, My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves, Bright Eyes - I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, various mix tapes, hip-hop singles, what everbody else tells me to play.
Time to go back and listen to Interpol, now.
