First Day back at DEM

Several things noticed on my first day back at DEM

Parking lot was moved down way past several other buildings due to parts of The Foundry building being renovated into luxury apartments. Because of this, parking is a little far off, but walking is even farther. Because we are such suckers, they have even implemented a shuttle service that goes from the office building and then back to the employee lot. Although you probably won’t catch me on one of those.

The building and office never changes. Computers and documents are exactly they way you left them last year. Except for some new wall work, The Foundry still looks very nice from the inside out.

The Italians will always be recognizable and you will always hear them down the hallway.

The background check will always be free for state employees, and the visit / drive down there is always somewhat fun.

A computer with Windows 95 isn’t quite bad. A job that can be done slow and a computer with Windows 95… really good.

The staircase up the mall by the train tracks was really tall and a huge workout the first time I tried them two years ago. Today, they are a snap.

The $4.25 chicken teriyaki meal at Surf & Turf at Prov. Place Mall remains the best deal in the food court.

People my age will always be at the mall when you are on the clock. I never have enough time to shop, but I do it anyway and wonder why I have a job during the day.

The 1 hour lunch time to me, is always very long, and the day will always end very short.

Work will always be either too much, too depending on someone else, not even there, or the damn office will be too hot.

Last but not least, at least 100 state officials will retire or change positions in one year when by the time you are assigned to update the damn city and town officials directory.
