80s Hip Hop

For once MSNBC writes a good article.

MSNBC - Remembering the golden age of hip-hop

Yes, most definitely 80’s hip hop is very good, and very much different than today’s. Back then, hip hop artists cared more about being different, instead of being quite the same as it is today. I still listen to some albums from PE, and De La Soul, and have been trying to find and listen to more groundbreaking albums from the 80’s. It was a good decade for hip hop, but it still didn’t get the respect it deserved.

It seems too many cats these days don’t pay enough attention to the music, and just skip right to having fun. Hip Hop today is conceived as nothing more than booty music. The rappers are just downplaying their shit because they know it is what MTV listeners wanted to hear.

The music business hate me
Cause the industry ain’t make me
Hustlers and boosters embrace me
And the music I be makin
I dump down for my audience
And double my dollars
They criticize me for it
Yet they all yell “Holla”
If skills sold
Truth be told
I’d probably be
Lyricly, Talib Kweli
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
(But i did five Mil)
I ain’t been rhymin like Common since

On The Black Album, Jay-Z heartedly admits to the music industry holding him back. While a few years ago, those who thought hip-hop was too monotonous hated Jay-Z. Fast forward to now, and several “musically good” albums later that hit close to heart, he has gained ALOT of respect back(IMHO).

I wish more and more rappers would just drop their gear and say fuck you to their heads so they can do the music they want.

It’s as if the best hip hop is heard outside the radio, outside MTV. It’s as if you wish they all weren’t hiding their abilities as artists. It’s as if you never heard it because it never got recorded.

PS That “Making The Band 2″ show was just horrible. Who knows what would have happened if P. Diddy didn’t pick such lazy people.

You bring up a good point. Today’s Hip Hop artists are more concerned with satisfying the masses with the same old tested formula of street cred, women, and money. Very few are willing to challenge the status quo. By the way, my apologies. It does indeed appear that you have put up a link for me. Props.

OK, looks like I am gonna lose the comment battle to one Phyllis “Philbert” Humperdinck. He seems to have taken over the Va’s site. Fortunately his comments are well worth reading. Thanks for helping me kill time at work Phil. But just remember, its only one battle, I WILL WIN THE WAR!!! (insert evil laugh here)

You see I currently have a desk job. But it’s a state job. So, I’m not gonna test. You guys, spend your work time in front of a computer so when you go home, you get sick of it.

But come the end of August, internet time will definitely be back on my list.

PS I am also slightly sick of hip hop locations blending together.

I know Biggie and Tupac died, but I really enjoyed the idea of where you were from being a big influence on your musical style.

How can hip hop be different if The Neptunes makes beats for West Coast Rappers?

You can find better than that, Snoop Dogg.
