The weekend, as told from my mom »

Why my cell phone sucks

I have had cell phone coverage from Sprint PCS for about 2 months. Before I was on Cingular wireless for 2 years out of high school and into some months of college. I had no complaints about coverage (there were always there, unless I was in NH), and I never went over my minutes (granted nights began at 7 by default). Right now, I guess I am re-adjusted back to using a cell phone, even though I occasionally forget to bring it with me sometimes (it’s really small dude). The phone made for an occasionally more fun semester, and at the first month, it did what it needed to do.

But after getting my third wireless bill, I have built up my anger. For the first time in my life, I talked more than I expected. And this is coming from a guy like me…. if you know me well enough, I absolutely hate phone conversation. Hate them. I can’t chew gum and talk on a phone for shit.

First, for starters, my phone is almost crap. I opted not to get a camera phone, because I have a digital camera, but not having gotten one, the ones I went for lacked alot of features that I wanted. The Samsung VI660 may be the smallest and lightest phone that most people have seen…but it lacks important features. For instance, no external display. I can’t see who’s calling until I use whatever part of my body to open the clamshell. Another problem, the battery. It seriously just doesn’t last long after its break in period. I can go through a day fully charged, and probably have three 5 minute conversations, and then I would have to recharge again. Expect what you can out of it’s size because the battery life from this small thing is pretty dinky.

Another factor that affects my phone’s performance is the Sprint network. In many parts of wherever I am, it just plain sucks and it ends up draining my battery switching towers literally all day. I thought for reliablity, Sprint would have a fairly good network considering I have heard worse about AT&T, but I was wrong. From what I have seen, Verizon probably gets the job the best, and then maybe Nextel. Even if I do get a signal, and a call comes through, my phone is so small it doesn’t project enough volume for me to hear.

At the flat price I pay monthly, I get 2 hours less night minutes than when I was on Cellular One/Cingular Wireless. Inflation couldn’t have gone up that high, but it’s a great strategy. Nobody really sits there and waits for night minutes to come to talk because in reality, most people’s night have begun hours ago. I guess that explains why I am over in my charges considering I am a young individual who makes the most calls right before night minutes start.

Pissah. Now I am just sick at looking my phone. I am sick of charging it all day, sick of even using it during the daytime, and sick of changing the volume at work because I know the backlight was draining the battery. Because of this stupid anger, I am even slightly annoyed when I even get a call, just apparently now I have to save those precious minutes for a more important time.

So just for that slight FYI. I don’t share my phone with anybody in my family and have always been a self supporting individual, except when it comes to school or automobiles. I will be paying this out of my pocket, and I hate bills. Hate them. I NEED THE MONEY! Please, just think about who pays your phone bill before trying to rack up mine.
