Fuck Microsoft

It’s always great to say the simpler, the better. Not everthing that looks complex and promises great features will give you good performance. I should have known better, but I will almost never trust Microsoft software anymore if I know there are better more reliable open-source software out there. In my case, trying to configure IIS for Windows XP to work alongside ActivePerl, PHP and stupid .Net is just a friggen headache. Yes, Microsoft has caused me enough headaches in the past week with their shitty software. They may have even caused me to lose sleep.

I was under the impression that I got PHP to work under my webpage, but it really wasn’t. Because Microsoft’s crap is so confusing, I just gave up. I was so frustrated, I realized it was time to start over. Even though I have had good results with what I wanted to do, IIS is a headache to configure. I figured anything would be better than using a Microsoft program and I didn’t realize that they there is an Apache HTTP web server for Windows, so I decided to give that a try.

It runs beautifully. While IIS needs a confusing application to configure its settings, Apache just has a basic textfile for its config. It’s almost a blessing. It did everything I wanted to on its first try, while only adding in lines of code in the text config. While this only took me an hour, I was cursing at Microsoft for days with no result. Earlier today, I re-setup my blog, and should soon start adding dynamic content to it soon.

Setting up Apache over IIS, really, is so much simpler. So friends, I recommend to never try IIS again. Apache, is really so much simpler, and from what I have seen, a lot faster. And, the best part, Apache, is free. You no longer need to look at that crappy Win XP cd from Microsoft again.

So thanks for other geeks out there that listen to the demands of other geeks and make free software. Thanks for the Apache Group for a reliable web server, Movable Type for a customizable weBlog and the support they give to their users, JAlbum for a customizable photo gallery program, Winamp for the best mp3 from the start, XVid for decompressing movie files, Mozilla Firefox for giving a cleaner, pop-blocking, faster web browser, the eDonkey project, Bittorrent, Limewire, and thanks to XBMP / Evolution X for powering my XBOX and keeping me dancing on tables with girls all semester.

In the end, the best software is free. I can rest with the best now.
