80’s night brings the truth »

Best 80’s night so far

Last night I joined Meg and Jay again for another awesome 80’s night at Club Hell. I wussed out last week because I sincerely didn’t have money and knew it was definitely a bad time to go. I promised Jay that I wouldn’t back out this time, and since the money was back in the picture, it had the elements of a good night waiting to begin. The longest days of summer have approached us and all high school and college kids should definitely be out of school by this time. Plus, yesterday was just hot, and a nice summer day to enjoy with friends. And Club Hell on Tuesday is one of those small reminders of why we love RI so much.

One of the most important elements of last night’s 80’s night was the music. Since I don’t always remember how events took place, I sure sometimes remember where I was or what I was feeling ‘when I heard that song’. Club Hell on Tuesday is not your average club night. The same songs don’t get repeated every weekend, and just playing that song is enough to make your night even better. Here is what I most remember.

“Pour Some Sugar on Me”, Def Leopard
The ultimate slut song. A great way to get things started, and of course, got me and Jay into our first trance. Yeah, there are balconies and poles and girls take advantage of them. Girls with skirts. Otherwise, great song to shout to.

Some old song by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Wow. This song was really really hard. As in I could never dance to it, but it made me realize how much this band’s older shit kicked ass. This song started a little punk sequence of sungs.

Some Ramones song, “Mother”, Danzig & “White Riot”, The Clash
By this time, all the punk heads in black were out. I can remember chanting “Oi, Oi, Oi” when Jay sat down to take a break, and I loved singing the words to “White Riot”.

“Don’t Stop Believing”, Journey
My second indication that this was to be a night to top. I have never heard this song much before, but I was very suprised at the support it raised in the club. So awesome to hear loud, and all I can remember is sitting on the couch with Jay singing some of the words, and gettin stuck in our second trance staring at some girls cleav across the room.

“I touch Myself”, Divinyls
I guess now an 80’s night staple, but really fun to sing and not look embarrassed.

“Girls and Boys”, Blur
Another staple, not necessarily 80’s but an awesome song to dance to that has an 80’s feel.

“Supersonic”, Oasis
Definitely a party pooper. I really really like this song. Knew all the words and everything. Just not everyone was feeling it.
Can I ride with you in your B.M.W ?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine
Some David Bowie song from Ziggy Stardust
“This is my favorite song!! Dance with me” Apparently Meghan’s favorite song. Not for long though. At this point, I had run into a sort of Cranston wall. First it was Marc Denton. Than Blair’s younger brother (who also works at Club Ultra), and then Rob Blair himself, then a slew of some more Cranston East people who by this time I have forgotten the names of. Wow, it was a lucky time to come considering I haven’t seen some of these guys in years. Much props to Marc Denton, who is here temporarily before he goes back to the war.

“Take on Me”, A-Ha
In my opinion, the most quintessential 80’s song. Awesome to sing to, and it’s got such a groove that you just have to look geekish while dancing to it. Definitely the song of the night.

“Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, Simple Minds
Apparently Meghans favorite song too. Great way to close the movie, The Breakfast Club, and a great way to close 80’s night.

Oh it doesn’t stop

SCENE: in the car, after we all pissed on the side of a building, and Meghan is sandwiched between two guys in the back of my car.

“So what are we listening to?”
“Oh, Paul Simon, he’s got some cool 80’s songs”
“Is this like the whole album?
“yeah”
“Do you have the ‘you can call me Al’ song”
“YEAH!”

“You Can Call Me Al”, Paul Simon
(see above paragraph)

“Taxman”, The Beatles
Me and Jay love yelling this song aloud in the middle of Eddy St. What made it funny this time was that Meg kept quiet the whole time till she said something to the other guys in the back to the like of

“So these are my friends, aren’t they crazy?”

Me and Jay kept singing. Apparently Meghan had the hardest time in the back of the car, and kept to herself while Jay and me were cutting up our vocal chords.

So, that is about most of last night that I care to remember. It was fun, sexy, and filled with good music. Thanks guys for last night, and more to remember.
